Far From Home: Shattering the Myth of the Model Minority

NAWHO is pleased to announce the publication of Far From Home: Shattering the Myth of the Model Minority (Tapestry Press, October 2003), a memoir by its founder, Mary Hayashi. Part autobiography and part Asian American women’s wellness guide, Far From Home traces her life from South Korea to America where Mary became a leading advocate for Asian American health issues.

One of the book’s main goals is to dispel the myth of the model minority, utilizing Mary’s personal stories and experiences, anecdotes from the women’s health community, and important NAWHO education and research information. Far From Home discusses a variety of health issues such as cancer, diabetes, and depression, and how factors like culture, race, and poverty impact health outcomes within this diverse community. Readers will have the opportunity to explore the critical health issues impacting Asian American women and families and experience a powerful message of prevention for those at risk.

“Mary C. Hayashi’s account of growing up in Korea and coming to America causes one to reflect upon things that are often taken for granted,” says Carol Lee, President of the California Medical Association Foundation. “It is a thoughtful analysis of the East meets West cultural shock.”
