Dana Garel brings 32 years of experience in marketing, sales, advocacy development and management in the healthcare industry. Ms. Garel’s commitment to overall healthcare education is the foundation of her skill set. Ms. Garel’s career began in 1972 working in the advertising department of a moderate size newspaper. In 1985 she transitioned into healthcare with a primary emphasis in Diabetes education and sales. During her career with Lilly she has had assignments in State Government Affairs, which included building women’s health and mental health coalitions in California, Oregon and Washington. She was also a Regional Manager with the Public Health Division accountable for managing the team in five states. She has also participated as a board member for the Professional Business Women of California and the California Institute for Mental Wellness.

Sarah Kim-Lee is a longtime Bay Area community advocate. She hosts a Korean-language public service television program and has operated an immigration clinic for the Korean elderly. Her extensive knowledge of the Korean immigrant community of Northern California has enabled her to develop and facilitate successful breast and cervical cancer prevention workshops for Korean women. Ms. Kim-Lee is also a commissioner of the Alameda County Advisory Commission on Aging.

A graduate of the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Yi-Shin Kuo did his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center and fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the same institution. After spending more than eight years at the New York Presbyterain Healthcare System, he returned to his alma mater. Dr. Kuo is currently involved in a full-time practice, teaching of residents and fellows, and clinical research. He also serves as a principal investivator of NCI sponsored clinical trials, and has focused on the teaching of minimal invasive surgery (laparoscopy and robotic surgery) to the fellows and residents.

She has 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and recently worked as the Scientific Manager at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals where she was dedicated to bridging cutting-edge osteoporosis science to accessible health education and outreach for diverse communities. Her work with national and regional osteoporosis researchers and thoughtleaders on the Pacific Northwest Osteoporosis Board has led to multiple educational activities with the goal of increasing awareness of osteoporosis. She is a longstanding, active member of the Asian Pacific American Network, a diversity group within P&G.
Descartes Li, MD

Descartes Li is an Attending Psychiatrist at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is Director of the UCSF Bipolar Program. He teaches both medical students and psychiatric residents at the UCSF School of Medicine, with a particular expertise in the impact of cultural issues on mental health. He also gives presentations on mental health issues, both locally and nationally. In addition, he is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Northern California Psychiatric Society Committee on Asian American Issues.

With over 25 years of nursing experience with diverse communities, Ms. Sze has been recognized as an expert in culturally competent patient care, providing workshops for agencies such as the New York City Department of Health. She holds an MSN from Pace University and an MPA from New York University.

David T. Takeuchi is a sociologist with postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology and mental health services research at Yale University. His areas of interest involve an examination of socio-cultural factors associated with mental health problems and a recently completed psychiatric epidemiological survey of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles. Dr. Takeuchi is an active participant of the Managed Care Center for the Study of Psychiatric Disorder at UCLA, and the National Research Center on Asian American Mental Health at UC-Davis.

Prior to joining NAWHO, Ms. Kobayashi worked for the Women of Color Coalition for Reproductive Health Rights, and the Feminist Majority Foundation. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Yale University.
Michelle Akina

With over fifteen years experience in nonprofit management, Michelle Akina has worked to develop culturally appropriate programs to improve health outcomes for diverse populations. In addition to her partnership work with community-based organizations, foundations and constituents, she also lends strong fiscal management skills to NAWHO’s programs, having served as NAWHO's finance director. Prior to joining NAWHO, Ms. Akina managed fiscal operations, strategic planning and human resources for nonprofit organizations, including the New York City Ballet and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Ms. Akina also served as the Co-Founder/Director of the Hawai`i Cultural Foundation. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Economics and Business Management from Cornell University.
